U.S. President erroneously says his father was born in Germany during a press conference with the NATO Secretary-General.

During a press conference with NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg, U.S. President Donald Trump wrongly claimed that his father, Fred Trump, was born in Germany.

The U.S. President´s geneological claim came after he criticized the government of German Chancellor Angela Merkel for "not paying their fair share."

“I have great respect for Angela and I have great respect for the country,” Trump said after accusing the Merkel administration of failing to pay their share in NATO. “My father is German, was German, born in a very wonderful place in Germany so I have a very great feeling for Germany," he mistakenly added.

Trump's father was born in New York City in 1905 after his grandfather, Friedrich, fell in love with Elisabeth Christ during a visit to his home country of Germany.

The U.S. President previously made a similar mistake last July when he stated during an interview that his parents were born in the European Union.

“I was there many, many years ago,” he said. “Meaning, my parents were born in the European Union. I love these countries; Germany, Scotland, they are still in there right?”

Trump's mother was actually born in Scotland, but his father was born to German parents in the United States.
