The leader of the FARC is being held in a clinic in the municipality of Villavicencio, in the department of Meta, and will undergo tests.

The leader of the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia, Timoleon Jimenez, or Timochenko, was hospitalized Sunday morning and was diagnosed with a transient ischemic attack, according to the first medical reports.

In a statement issued Sunday afternoon, the FARC said the leader's condition was stable and satisfactory adding that "the medical report recommended a period of exams, observation and rest."

The FARC stated, "This morning after complaining of pain, he was taken to the hospital for preventive medical exams in order to diagnose (his symptoms) accurately and come up with an appropriate treatment plan."

The group also thanked organizations and individuals for their immediate expressions of solidarity.

Lydis Hererra, director of the clinic, explained that Timochenko received "a diagnosis of transient ischemic attack," which is similar to a stroke, but usually lasts only a few minutes and causes no permanent damage.

In a press conference, Herrera said that the leader of the FARC presented symptoms such as speech impairment and numbness in his left arm, but assured that until now his progress has been satisfactory and he will continue to be monitored in the intensive care unit of the clinic.

Timochenko was taken to the Cooperative Clinic in the municipality of Villavicencio, department of Meta, according to El Tiempo.

Later in the day, Timochenko himself posted on his Twitter account belying the rumors of his health, saying that they have been circulating for two years now and added, "Thank you to those who are worried about my health. Everything is going well, I also thank the medical staff for their care."

Timochenko returned in late May to Colombia from Cuba, where he was part of the negotiating team for the peace talks with the government of Juan Manuel Santos. Eight months ago, he underwent heart treatment surgery on the island but has had no health problems since.
