Abbas remarked that the defiance of members of the family was a reflection of Palestinians holding onto their land amid Israeli occupation.

On Monday, Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas met with the family of Israeli-detainee minor, Ahed Tamimi.

The Tamimis were guests of the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) chair at the presidential headquarters in Ramallah.

“The peaceful popular resistance against the occupation is a powerful weapon in the hands of the Palestinian people and exposes the falsity of the occupation,” Abbas told the Tamimis.

During the visit, Abbas remarked that the defiance of members of the family was a reflection of Palestinians holding onto their land amid Israeli occupation.

“It shows the entire world the brutality of the occupation and the right of our people to self-determination and the establishment of an independent Palestinian state like the rest of the people of the world,” he explained.

Abbas added “confronting the might of the occupation and the assaults carried out by its soldiers,” displayed the strength of the family.

The Tamimis, in turn, lauded Abbas' policies to attain freedom and independence.

The 17-year-old Palestinian, Ahed Tamimi, was arrested late last year. The teen's mother and cousin also face charges.

Abbas first praised the teen at a conference at the Al-Azhar University in Cairo, last month.

“She attacked and struck an armed soldier and didn’t fear. Now she sits in prison,” Abbas said, implying that he considered slapping soldiers an act of “peaceful resistance.”

Tamini told the court that “I saw the same soldiers who hit my cousin, this time in front of my house. I could not keep quiet and I responded as I did.”

The detained minor has been in custody pending a trial scheduled to begin on Feb. 13.
