Mexican officials allowed U.S. Border Patrol's Western Corridor Tunnel Interdiction Group to enter the tunnel and determine if an exit point exists in the United States.

A hi-tech, solar-powered tunnel has been discovered by Mexico state police and military officials under the United States-Mexico borderCBS reported citing U.S. Border Patrol agents.

The solar system powers lighting and a ventilation system. The underpass has a rail system running the length of the tunnel as well as two sump pumps, typically used to remove water.

Officials disclosed Tuesday that the secret passage measures 191 meters, including 102 meters of which is in United States territory.

Mexican officials allowed U.S. Border Patrol's Western Corridor Tunnel Interdiction Group to enter the tunnel to map it and determine if an exit point exists in the United States, U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) spokesman Ralph DeSio said.

The tunnel, however, has no exit point.

DeSion disclosed that the entrance to the tunnel is located at a house which is some 67 meters south of the international boundary, adding that the entry point had a shaft that is about 31 feet deep.

The incomplete tunnel was found last month while security officials were conducting an operation in Jacume, Baja California, Mexico. The underpass connects the two countries in a remote area east of San Diego.

Over the years, U.S. and Mexican authorities have discovered several cross-border tunnels, which are notably used to smuggle drugs.
