Women, as well as allies, gathered worldwide to commemorate the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women by holding demonstrations, rallies and protests.
The chosen date, November 25, is the anniversary of the 1960 assassination of the Mirabal sisters – political activists in the Dominican Republic – whose killings were carried out by U.S.-backed dictator Rafael Trujillo's right-hand man and his cronies.
According to the United Nations, violence against women is a reality for 1 in 3 women worldwide.
