This Friday marks the 121th anniversary of the birth of David Alfaro Siqueiros, a committed communist, whose work reflected his ideals and a talent that positioned him as one of the greatest of Mexican muralism.

The painter, soldier and political activist David Alfaro Siqueiros, born in Chihuahua in northern Mexico on December 29, 1896, studied at the School of Fine Arts in Mexico.

Many of his works were made while in prison or in exile. Siqueiros was strongly linked to the Mexican Communist Party.

The artist-politician joined the Constitutionalist Army of Venustiano Cerranza at 18 years of age. He also fought as a volunteer in the Spanish Civil War.
