Dominica Destruction After Hurricane Maria

IN PICTURES: Hurricane Maria ravished the small Caribbean island of Dominica.

teleSUR correspondent Madelein Garcia documented the destruction caused by Hurricane Maria in Dominica, where she reported the entire population has been affected and rescue operations are difficult due to roads being obstructed.

Some small villages in isolated communities have been totally destroyed as Venezuelan and Cuban rescue teams reached these outer areas.

So far, 15 people have been confirmed dead due to the “brutal” and “unprecedented” hurricane, noted the Prime Minister of Dominica Roosevelt Skerrit.

Though Skerrit wasn't scheduled to attend the 72nd U.N. General Assembly, he traveled to New York Saturday to describe the widespread destruction on his island and ask for relief aid.

Calling for action on global climate change, the Prime Minister of Dominica Roosevelt Skerrit stressed the need for “all countries to do more,” especially for the safety of those smaller nations that bear the brunt of the destruction.
