Thousands of Argentines took to the streets of the country on Thursday to reject the federal judiciary's issuance of an arrest warrant against human rights activist and president of the Mothers of the Plaza de Mayo, Hebe de Bonafini. The organization is accused of siphoning off public funds from a social housing program known as “Shared Dreams.”
Police were dispatched to arrest the iconic human rights defender on Thursday, but they failed to carry out the arrest due to a human chain of supporters who blocked off the Buenos Aires neighborhood in which she is currently residing. Hebe de Bonafini has resisted the warrant and plans on attending a similar rally today in the coastal city of Mar del Plata.
However, the federal judge who issued the warrant has threatened the activist with an arrest that will occur at a time and place of the state's choosing.
