Histadrut’s leader Arnon Bar-David, which union represents hundreds of thousands of workers, made the call for a one-day general strike, and was supported by by Israel’s main manufacturers and entrepreneurs in the high-tech sector.
“I call on the people of Israel to go out to the streets tonight and tomorrow and for everyone to take part in the strike,” said Bar-David, and added that only their intervention will “move those who need to be moved.”
The strike is planned to start at 6 a.m. and is currently planned as a one-day strike, with Bar-David saying decisions beyond Monday will be made later, according to The Times of Israel newspaper.
One of the main actions will take place at Ben Gurion International Airport. In this, all flights from 08:00 (local time) will be canceled.
In addition, the opposition leader Yair Lapid also called to large businesses and local authorities to join the strike and “shut down the economy.”
With six boxes wrapped in Israeli flags resembling coffins, the hostages’ relatives led a mass march on Sunday night in Tel Aviv and called “all of Israel to take to the streets and choose the right side of history.”
The discovery in Gaza of the bodies of six Israeli hostages rekindled anger against Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, and cracks widened within his own government for not agreeing to a truce.
