Dueik was arrested during an IDF operation in the West Bank region of Hebron. The Speaker of Parliament had been released along with other Palestinian politicians only three days earlier.
According to WAFA, in addition to Dueik, two other West Bank civilians were also arrested during the raid.
Hamas, for its part, condemned the arrest of the president of the parliament, calling the “brutal and extremely aggressive “raid that led to the arrest.
In a statement, Hamas called on international organizations to release not only Dueik but all the prisoners and disappeared in the West Bank and Gaza Strip.
Aziz Dueik was elected president of the Palestinian Parliament, after the 2006 elections where Hamas won over other parties such as Fatah. Shortly after the attacks of 7 October the parliamentarian was taken into custody during one of the first incursions into the West Bank
