In a statement released on Tuesday, HRW emphasized that this action is not only unjustified but could also worsen the humanitarian situation in Gaza, where there are fears that famine may be used as a weapon of war.
The organization has described the recent approval by the Knesset, Israel’s parliament, of laws aimed at shutting down the offices of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) in East Jerusalem and limiting its operations in Gaza and the West Bank as a “terrible decision.”
Established in 1950, UNRWA has been crucial in providing social services, shelter, and education to thousands of Palestinian refugees, many of whom are descendants of those displaced during the creation of the State of Israel.

HRW also criticized Israel for failing to provide credible evidence to justify its attacks against UNRWA, which has faced efforts at delegitimization.
In its statement, the NGO urged the Israeli government to repeal these laws and allow humanitarian workers to continue their vital work in the region.
The international community is watching this situation with concern, as it could have serious repercussions for thousands of Palestinians who rely on humanitarian aid.
