Haitian Prime Minister Alix Didier Fils-Aimé urged national unity and collective action to pave the way for a constitutional referendum and free, inclusive, and credible elections, as the country grapples with a prolonged political and security crisis.
Haiti has gone ten years without elections, while escalating armed violence and institutional collapse threaten prospects for stability.
During the Flag Day commemoration, relocated this year from Arcahaie to Cap-Haïtien, officials faced criticism over excessive spending, while protesters voiced their anger at the government, leading to clashes with the National Police.
The Integrated United Nations Office in Haiti (BINUH) reports that in the first three months of 2025, violence has resulted in:
- 1,617 fatalities
- 580 injured
- 1,494 kidnappings
With over one million displaced due to gang violence, Haiti saw 5,626 deaths in the past year, intensifying its humanitarian and security crisis.
Didier Fils-Aimé emphasized that overcoming differences and working collectively is essential for restoring order, yet ongoing violence and instability continue to obstruct political progress.
