“The BRICS group seeks to promote cooperation and solidarity among emerging markets and developing countries to defend justice and be a stable and positive force in international affairs at a time when protectionism is growing,” said Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian at a press conference.

Lin stated that Xi Jinping is set to address the summit and that China is eager to engage with other world leaders to contribute toward strengthening a multipolar global order.

Brazilian sources report that this special summit, called by President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, will convene on September 8 to discuss challenges facing the multipolar world system and coordinate a joint stance against U.S. tariffs.

This BRICS gathering, led by China and Russia and representing key economies from the Global South, occurs amidst ongoing tensions stemming from the trade conflicts caused by Donald Trump’s administration.

The last BRICS summit took place in July 2025 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, with the next one planned for 2026 in India. Today, the BRICS alliance includes ten member nations such as Egypt, Ethiopia, Indonesia, Iran, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates.
