The 78 year-old Algerian President Abdelmajid Tebboune won the presidential election held on Saturday with 94.65% of the vote, according to official count. Tebboune had the support of the National Liberation Front, which is the majority party in parliament and has ruled Algeria since independence from France in 1962.

Second place went to the Islamist candidate of the Movement for a Society for Peace (MSP), Abdelali Hassani, with 3.17% of the vote followed by Youcef Aouchiche of the Front des Forces Socialistes (FFS) with 2.16%, as reported by the National Independent Electoral Authority (ANIE) at a press conference.
The director of ANIE did not clarify this Sunday the final figure of participation, which yesterday set at 48% on average, and was limited to offering voter numbers: 5,329,253 Algerians who opted for Tebboune out of the 5,630,196 Algerians who exercised their right to vote on Saturday, which would represent 23% of the electorate.
The figure was nine points higher than 39% of the 2019 elections, which was the lowest rate in the history of presidential elections in Algeria.
Elections in Algeria are double-round, with no majority in the first round, but the country has never held a second ballot, as this time.
Algeria is Africa’s largest country by area and, with almost 45 million people, it’s the continent’s second most populous after South Africa to hold presidential elections in 2024.
