Now sports lovers can revel in 360-degree views of their favorite teams, watching games from a virtual luxury suite in the company of online friends.

After a year in development, fantasy sports are ascending to the next level as virtual reality enters the field with LiveLike: a U.S. start-up that has already raised almost US$23 million from major sports and media companies.

Now sports lovers can revel in 360-degree views of their favorite teams, watching hockey, soccer, football and basketball games from a virtual luxury suite in the company of online friends.

Choose from a variety of colorful characters and check statistics, highlights and replays without the need for expensive and cumbersome VR goggles.

Armchair athletes can enjoy the virtual reality via a smartphone, cardboard glasses, or no gadgetry whatsoever: developers have promised that viewers will still have an unforgettable experience.

“You have the prerogative to watch games with or without virtual reality glasses because, in either of the two ways, you will have a much more immersive experience," says LiveLike co-founder Miheer Walavalkar, emphasizing the democratization of the interactive experience.

"For those who do not have virtual reality glasses, they can finally see what they are missing in VR."

The company – launched in 2015 – has already produced 76 games internationally, streamed over 300 hours' of sports content, and joined forces with major sports and gaming organizations, including the French Tennis Federation, the NBA, Evolution Media, and Lepe Partners.

Former NBA Commissioner David Stern, one of the investors, said: "What has me excited about LiveLike is how they are bringing social viewing to live sports in a way that connects friends and fans like never before."

The multi-million dollar company has hosted numerous events so far, including the 2017 Super Bowl, UEFA Champions League Final, NCAA Basketball East Tournament, and the French Open Tennis Tournament.
