Israeli forces fired tear gas and rubber-coated bullets at Palestinians attending a peaceful protest in the northern city of Nablus in the occupied West Bank.
Israeli forces fired rubber-coated bullets and tear gas on hundreds of Palestinians Sunday in the northern city of Nablus in the occupied West Bank.
The Palestinians were holding a peaceful demonstration at the Huwara checkpoint to protest against the arrest by Israel of the Palestinian Authority’s Jerusalem governor Adnan Ghaith and several members of the Palestinian Fatah group.
They were also showing solidarity with Israa Jaabis who has been sentenced to 11 years in an Israeli prison on attempted murder charges when her car broke down and exploded near an Israeli military checkpoint, leaving her severely burned.
Israeli soldiers used tear gas canisters and rubber bullets to disperse the demonstrators asphyxiating them temporarily.
The spokesperson for the Palestinian Red Crescent Society (PRCS) told Ma’an News Agency that one Palestinian was shot and injured by Israeli occupying forces and four others suffered from tear-gas inhalation. According to Wafa, there are no reports of arrests yet.
Ghaith was arrested last week based on Section 7 of the 1993 Oslo Accords Law which forbids Palestinians in East Jerusalem from interacting with Palestinian security forces. However, he was released Sunday.
“The court decided to set Adnan free on the condition that he remain under house arrest until Thursday evening, does not enter the West Bank for 14 days and pays [NIS] 500 bail,” Rami Othman, Ghaith’s lawyer said.
Last Monday the Israeli forces also arrested 32 East Jerusalem residents on charges of feeding information to the Palestinian security forces.
